What is Nd: YAG Laser?
Nd:YAG stands for neodymum-doped yttrium aluminum garnet, which is the crystal used to refract light in the laser device. Now you know why everyone uses the abbreviation. It may sound technical, but it's actually quite simple. The Nd:YAG is a type of non-ablative laser used for numerous procedures. This works by heating the target (hemoglobin, nail fungus, or wart virus) above 70 degress celcius for at least 1 ms which destorys the target. Non-ablative basically means "non-wounding" which results in less damage to the skin, lowers chances of complications and lowers "down time" after the procedure.
How is the Nordlys™ Nd:YAG different from others?
The Nd:YAG applicator uses SoftCool™ cooling, where a continuous stream of cool damp air is blown on to the skin at the point of treatment. The cooling is integrated into the Nd:YAG applicator and automatically starts at the beginning of the treatment. We use a thin layer of optical gel that aids in the cooling process. We cool the treatment area before & after which gives better patient comfort.
What kinds of skin concerns can the Nordlys™ Nd:YAG treat?
It can treat a wide variety of skin conditions which include: facial and leg Spider Veins, Cherry and Strawberry Angioma, Hemangiomas, Venous Lakes, Port Wine Stains, benign cutaneous warts and Onychomycosis (Nail fungus). ***Please note that this DOES NOT treat varicose veins.
Can Nordlys™ Nd:YAG be used on all Fitzpatrick Skin Types?
Depending on what condition is being treated. Facial spider veins, Venous Lakes and Port Wine Stain can be treated for Fitzpatrick Skin Type 1-4. Warts & nail fungus for Fitzpatrick Skin Type 1-5. Leg vessels for Fitzpatrick Skin Type 1-6. Health Canada Approved.
How long does it take to see results & how long do they last?
The results and duration of the effects can vary depending on the specific condition being treated and individual factors. Some people may start to see improvements after the first session, but a series of treatments is often recommended for optimal results. The longevity of results also varies. Please discuss with your medical aesthetician.
Does it hurt? Is there any downtime?
Mild pain may occur during treatment but active skin cooling reduces the discomfort. In some treatments analgesic cream will be applied to help with the discomfort. Downtime is minimal to moderate as redness, swelling and bruising may occur at the site of treatment which can take a few days to weeks to diminish.
What are the common side effects?
While these treatments are generally safe and effective, they can have some side effects. Common side effects include redness, swelling, discomfort and bruising. Side effects can last anywhere from days to months depending on what you are having treated.
** Note that if a consultation is necessary for your desired treatment, it may be possible to have the treatment performed during the consultation.
