What is SkinPen Precision Microneedling?

SkinPen Precision is a leading skin remodelling device that creates temporary small microscopic channels in your skin.  This simple procedure activates your bodies natural skin healing power to increase collagen and elastin so your skin returns to a healthier looking and youthful appearance. The SkinPen treatment works in three simple steps, designed to activate the skin’s natural healing process.  1) Inflammation - microneedles penetrate the skin’s surface, triggering a natural immune response to disinfect, remove debris, increase blood flow, and activate the creation of new tissue. 2) Proliferation - The micro-channels or tiny holes created by SkinPen are rebuilt with new granulation cells that include collagen proteins. Additionally, a new network of blood vessels develops. 3) Remodeling - New dermal tissues form, rich in collagen and elastin proteins. These proteins improve skin quality, visibly reducing facial acne scars and neck wrinkles, leaving skin more smooth, radiant, and younger-looking.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

Microneedling is safe for all skin types and can treat a variety of skin conditions. These include but are not limited to: tones and tightens skin, improves texture, balances & brightens, refines pores, acne scarring, other skin scarring like hypertrophic (burns, surgery), stretch marks, lift lose/sagging skin, tightens crepey skin, hyperpigmentation, stimulates blood circulation, sun damage, redness/Rosacea, fine lines and wrinkles, as well as hair loss. The micro-injuries facilitate deeper product penetration, improving effectiveness of skin care products.

How long does it take to see results?

The initial skin tightening and pore reduction can be seen in most cases immediately after treatment. However, you won't see your final microneedling results until four to six weeks after treatment. Both collagen production and cellular turnover are accelerated, but it still takes our body time to produce new collagen and heal. Results vary with skin type, condition, and number of treatments.

Is this safe for darker skin tones?

Yes.....It is the only FDA-cleared microneedling device and is designed to minimize risks like post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) in darker skin tones.  Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) after microneedling can be a common response, especially in Fitzpatrick skin types 5 and 6, due to increased melanin activity triggered by inflammation.  While safe, darker skin tones do have a higher risk of PIH, so gentler settings, proper aftercare, and melanin-friendly protocols (like prepping with tyrosinase inhibitors) help ensure the best results.

How long do the results last?

The effects of this treatment will depend on a patient's skin condition, lifestyle, sun exposure, skin care regimen, smoking, and other factors that are patient specific. Follow-up treatments are typically necessary to maintain achieved result. Long term results can be maintained with consistent treatments.

Does it hurt? Is there any downtime?

Most patients experience only mild discomfort. A local anesthetic cream can be applied to the skin prior to the treatment for a more comfortable experience. Ice may also be used during your procedure to assist with discomfort. To note, women on their menstrual cycle may find they are more sensitive to pain, it may help to schedule appointments around this time. It is minimally invasive so there is very little downtime, ~5 days. Microneedling can be safely repeated every 4 -6 weeks until you achieve desired results. Minimum of 4 weeks between treatments to allow for skin cell rejuvenation.

What are the risks and side effects?

In general, microneedling is considered very safe. The most common reactions and/or side effects are immediate redness, irritation, bruising, mild swelling, breakouts and sensitivity. You may also experience slight bleeding at puncture sites immediately following the procedure. Keep in mind, not everyone will have the side effects mentioned. If you are on a blood thinning medication or OTC supplement, you may have increased risk of bruising.
