What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)?

Intense Pulse Light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to treat various skin conditions. The treatment involves the use of a handheld device that emits pulses of broad-spectrum light onto the skin. The light energy is absorbed by specific targets in the skin, such as melanin (responsible for pigmentation) or hemoglobin (found in blood vessels). This absorption leads to heat generation, which then damages or destroys the targeted cells without harming the surrounding tissue.

What is Ellipse SWT IPL™ and why is it better?

Ellipse SWT IPL™ uses Selective Waveband Technology (SWT) and Dual Mode Filtering to selectively target specific chromophores (target molecules that absorb light) in the skin, such as melanin and hemoglobin, by filtering light through water (acting as an extra filter). By using specific wavelengths and filters, the energy can be directed more precisely to the intended target, minimizing absorption by surrounding tissues like water. Depending on the treatment, certian wavelengths don't contribute useful energy to the specific target and only heat the skin's water content. This makes treatments more comfortable, reduces heat to the tissue, and requires less energy leading to faster results, reduced downtime, minimizes discomfort and a lower risk of burns.

What kinds of skin concerns can the Ellipse SWT IPL™ treat?

The Nordlys Ellipse SWT IPL™ can treat a wide variety of skin conditions which include: diffuse redness, hyperpigmentation, Rosacea, facial spider, broken capillaries, Port Wine Stains, red scarring, Hemangiomas, Solar lentigo (age/liver spots), freckles, Epidermal Melasma, sun damaged pigmented skin and Inflammatory Acne & more.

Can Ellipse SWT® IPL be used on all Fitzpatrick Skin Types?

No... SWT is safe for skin types 1 - 4 and cannot be used on skin type 5 & 6.

How long does it take to see results & how long do they last?

The results and duration of the effects can vary depending on the specific condition being treated and individual factors. Some people may start to see improvements after the first session, but a series of treatments is often recommended for optimal results. The longevity of results also varies. For conditions like sunspots or pigmentation, results can be long-lasting if proper sun protection measures are followed. However, for conditions like vascular lesions or redness, maintenance sessions may be required over time. Practicing good skincare, sun protection, and following post-treatment care instructions can influence the duration of results.

Does it hurt?

During the procedure you may feel warmth and a snapping sensation like a rubber band against your skin. Many people find the discomfort to be tolerable. Some areas of the body may be more sensitive than others. The level of discomfort depends on factors such as your pain tolerance, the area being treated and the amount of pigment/dark spots and redness. To note, women on their menstrual cycle may find they are more sensitive to pain, it may help to schedule appointments around this time.

Is there any downtime?  What are the risks and side effects?

You can resume normal activities immediately as the redness and swelling typically subsides in 4 to 12 hours.  Some of the common side effects are redness and swelling. It's crucial to follow post-treatment care instructions provided to minimize potential side effects and ensure a smooth recovery. If you are on a blood thinning medication or OTC supplement, you may have increased risk of bruising.

How can I tell if my treatment is effective?

The darkening of pigmented lesions (such as age or sun spots), vascularities, or acne, as well as peeling or flaking, are strong indicators that your treatment is effective. If the pigmented area is deeper, it might not completely disappear, which is why multiple sessions may be necessary.
