What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)?
Intense Pulse Light therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to treat various skin conditions. The treatment involves the use of a handheld device that emits pulses of broad-spectrum light onto the skin. The light energy is absorbed by specific targets in the skin, such as melanin (responsible for pigmentation) or hemoglobin (found in blood vessels). This absorption leads to heat generation, which then damages or destroys the targeted cells without harming the surrounding tissue.
What is SWT (Selective Waveband Technology) IPL™ and why is it better?
Ellipse SWT IPL™ uses Selective Waveband Technology (SWT) and Dual Mode Filtering to selectively target melanin (pigment) contained in each hair follicle and leaving the surrounding tissue undamaged by filtering light through water (acting as an extra filter). This makes treatments more comfortable, reduces heat to the tissue, and requires less energy leading to faster results, reduced downtime, minimizes discomfort and a lower risk of burns.
How does Ellipse IPL™ work in the reduction of hair growth?
The pulses of light damage the hair follicles that are in the current growth phase making it unable to regrow which leads to permanent hair reduction.
Can Ellipse IPL™ be used on all Fitzpatrick Skin types?
YES!!! Health Canada Certified for safe treatment in patients with a higher skin concentration of melanin (darker skinned patients/Fitzpatrick Skin Type 5 & 6). As the SWT specifically targets only the melanin in the hair, the penetration depth of these wavelength is enough to reach the deeper hair follicles.
How long does it take to see results & how long do they last?
Multiple treatments are necessary in order to target hair in their various cycles. Results can often be seen after one treatment as the energy has disabled the growth structure of the folicle. The hair root is usally eliminated or its growth is stunted (comes in finer and lighter). The results can vary from person to person, and factors such as individual hair growth patterns, hormonal changes, and the number of sessions received can impact the longevity of the results.
Does it hurt? Is there any downtime?
Ellipse IPL™ is less painful compared to traditional laser hair removal methods. The sensation is often described as a mild stinging or snapping feeling, similar to the snap of a rubber band against the skin. To note, women on their menstrual cycle may find they are more sensitive to pain, it may help to schedule appointments around this time. SWT IPL devices incorporate cooling systems to help minimize discomfort during the treatment. There is minimal downtime and generally allows individuals to resume their regular activities shortly after the session.
What are the risks and side effects?
You may experience some mild redness or warmth in the treated area. This is a normal and temporary reaction to the energy delivered during the treatment. The duration of redness can vary among individuals but usually subsides within a few hours to a day. Some people may also experience slight swelling or a sensation similar to a mild sunburn, but these effects are generally short-lived.
** Note that if a consultation is necessary for your desired treatment, it may be possible to have the treatment performed during the consultation.
