What is Botox & how does it work?
Botox® Cosmetic is a non-invasive injectable treatment that can help you eliminate fine lines and wrinkles like worry lines, frown lines or crow’s feet. This product works thanks to its active ingredient, botulinum toxin.
Botulinum toxin is a naturally occurring protein with nerve-blocking properties that can interrupt the nerves that tell your muscles to contract. When you make a particular facial expression repeatedly, such as furrowing the brow or squinting, the delicate muscles of your face create lines around the eyes and brow that can become a permanent addition to your appearance over time. When Botox® Cosmetic is injected into those problem spots, the medication releases those muscles and restores a smooth, youthful expression.
What are the benefits of Botox?
There are many benefits of Botox. Botox provides a less invasive alternative to cosmetic surgery with impressive results. Regular treatments can help prevent the formation of new wrinkles by reducing muscle movement, achieving a refreshed & youthful appearance without affecting your natural expressions.
Effective for various cosmetic concerns including frown lines (11's), forehead lines, top of nose (Bunny Lines), eyebrows/hooded eyes (Brow Lift), wrinkles around the eyes (Crow's Feet), wrinkles under the eyes (Tear Trough), lines around the mouth (Lipstick Lines/Smoker's Line's), chin (to prevent dimpling), jawline/angle and neck.
Botox can be used for medical issues as well, such as excessive sweating, migraines, teeth grinding (Bruxism) and TMJ.
When will I start seeing results? How long will it last?
Botox generally starts to take effect within 3-5 days & you'll see the full results in about 2 weeks. This is because it takes time for the toxin to fully block nerve impulses to the muscles. We will check your results after the two weeks ans see if any touch ups are needed.
We wish that Botox lasted forever!? Unfortunately, it doesn't. Eventually, the effects of the neurotoxin will diminish, allowing the nerves to send signals to the muscles to contract again. Botox usually lasts around 3 to 4 months, though some individuals may experience shorter effects lasting about 2 months.
First-time users often notice that the effects may not last as long, but they usually increase after the second treatment. The duration can vary depending on individual factors like muscle activity, the area being treated, and personal metabolism. Consistent treatments can help maintain results over time.
Does is hurt? Is there downtime?
Botox injections cause minimal discomfort, often feeling as a quick pinch or stinging sensation. You can typically return to your regular activities right after the procedure. There's minimal downtime, and most people get back to their daily routines within 24 hours.
What happens if I stop getting Botox?
When you stop receiving Botox injections, the impact on your body will depend on the reasons for using Botox and the duration of your treatments.
You will likely see your wrinkles gradually return as the muscle activity resumes. This typically happens over a few months. Discontinuing Botox typically doesn’t cause any long-term side effects.
What are the risks and side effects?
Side effects from botulinum toxin injections vary depending on the area receiving treatment. Most issues are mild and improve in a day or two. Possible side effects include: pain, swelling, redness or bruising at the treatment site, headache or flu-like symptoms, temporary drooping eyelids (ptosis) or crooked eyebrows, temporary crooked smile or drooling, eye irritation or redness, infection at the injection site and a heavy or full feeling in forehead.
With continued use these side effects typically diminish or disappear all together.
One note of caution: Don't rub or massage the treated areas after the wrinkle treatment because it can cause the botulinum toxin to migrate to another area of your face. If this happens, you could have temporary facial weakness or drooping.
